Andrew is a PhD candidate in Sociology at UC Berkeley. His dissertation, “From Cleantech to Carbontech: The Transformation of the Political Economy of Climate Change,” draws on evidence from five years of participant observation, interviews, document analysis, and a novel dataset of “green” investments. It argues that the rise of carbon capture technologies is fundamentally changing the political economy of climate change and our understanding of the climate crisis.
Andrew has a long history of engagement in climate politics. Since 2020 he has volunteered as a policy analyst and advocate with a California climate justice organization and worked in collaboration with environmental justice organizations on state climate issues. He’s also worked for the last 1.5 years as a researcher at UC Berkeley’s Labor Center, focused on the “high road development” of green jobs. Prior to graduate school, he worked with a small group of activists fighting a major highway expansion in Portland, OR that would have increased car dependence and displaced a historically Black neighborhood.
