Hilda Afeku-Amenyo is a sustainable finance researcher currently pursuing her PhD at Montclair State University. With a decade of experience in the financial services sector and her ongoing degree in environmental science, she is poised to make significant contributions to the financing of the global sustainability agenda. Her research interests encompass green and blue bonds, ESG, the clean energy transition, and funding clean technology.

Her doctoral research focuses on the intersection of green bonds and the clean energy transition. It emphasizes the critical need for investments in low-carbon infrastructure and renewable energy sources to facilitate the shift to a low-carbon economy at the local government level, using New Jersey as a base case. Green bonds, particularly green general obligation bonds and green revenue bonds, serve as essential financial tools in mobilizing debt capital markets to finance local sustainable initiatives.

Hilda’s work explores the performance, impact, challenges, and socio-political aspects of these financial instruments. It also investigates the funding limitations of local governments and municipalities in the U.S., highlighting political, regulatory, technical, economic, social, and environmental barriers to the sustainable energy transition. Her research underscores the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and frameworks to guide decision-makers through the energy transition, while also stressing the need for tailored financial solutions that consider the unique social and environmental characteristics of sustainable projects and bond issuers.
