Dr. Carol Atkinson-Palombo is a Professor in the Department of Geography, Sustainability, Community and Urban Studies at the University of Connecticut. During her tenure from 2017 to 2022, she held the position of Director of Environmental Studies. Dr. Atkinson-Palombo is well-versed in the field of urban ecology, having undergone a five-year training program as a National Science Foundation IGERT scholar in Urban Ecology. Her expertise lies in conducting research that is not only interdisciplinary but also policy-relevant and geared towards practical application.
In her research, Dr. Atkinson-Palombo employs a variety of geographical techniques, including GIS-based spatial analysis, statistical modeling, and qualitative methods. These methodologies allow her to evaluate the impact of policies designed to foster sustainable cities. Her primary area of focus is transportation sustainability, which has far-reaching implications for various societal concerns such as air pollution, land use, global climate change, and social and environmental equity. She also has several projects on just transitions to a low carbon economy.
Beyond her research, Dr. Atkinson-Palombo is actively engaged in a wide range of service activities at the University of Connecticut, as well as at national and international levels.
