Dr. Godwin Aigbe is an interdisciplinary human geographer and social science researcher specializing in energy, environment, and society, with a particular focus on methane emissions, gas flaring, climate governance, and energy justice. He holds a PhD in Human Geography and Environment from the University of York, an MSc in Energy and Environmental Management from Teesside University, and a BSc in Applied Geophysics from Ambrose Alli University. His work sits at the intersection of political ecology, socio-technical systems, and environmental governance, examining how institutional design, regulatory frameworks, and lived experience shape environmental outcomes and inequalities.
His doctoral research developed a multi-scalar framework for analyzing global gas flaring, positioning it as a governance and institutional challenge rather than a purely technical issue. This work has been published in peer-reviewed journals including Energy Research & Social Science, Anthropocene Science, and Climate, and has contributed to ongoing debates on climate governance, environmental justice, and energy transitions.
Alongside his academic work, Dr. Aigbe has extensive experience in applied research, teaching, and consultancy. He currently works as a Principal Researcher and Consultant, leading interdisciplinary projects on energy, climate, ESG, and environmental governance across the UK and the Global South. He has also held teaching roles across multiple higher education institutions, where he delivers research-led teaching, supervises student projects, and supports the development of critical and applied research skills.
His work is characterized by a commitment to bridging academic research with real-world impact. He engages with policymakers, practitioners, and communities to translate complex research into actionable insights, with a particular emphasis on addressing environmental harm, improving governance systems, and advancing equitable and sustainable energy transitions.
