Dr. Virginie Arantes is a postdoctoral researcher supported by the National Fund for Scientific Research (F.R.S.-FNRS) and holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Her prior research focused on China’s environmental governance, culminating in the publication of her book, “China’s Green Consensus” (2022), which delves into authoritarian environmentalism and civil society dynamics. Arantes has also published papers in journals such as the Journal of Environmental Management, Journal of Contemporary China, and Journal of Social Entrepreneurship.
Building on her expertise, Arantes’ current research investigates the influence of green nationalism on the construction of national identity, particularly within Southeast Asian geopolitics. Her work explores regional nuances and provides valuable insights into an understudied aspect of green nationalism outside of Europe, enriching our understanding of societal transitions towards sustainability and governance dynamics in diverse contexts. Her research extends beyond this focal point to encompass a wide array of topics within environmental politics, governance, and sustainability. With a holistic approach that integrates political science, environmental studies, and area studies, Dr. Arantes explores the intricate interactions between state actors, civil society, and environmental movements. Through her analysis, she reveals the complexities inherent in shaping policies and practices related to environmental conservation and sustainability within the broader context of geopolitics, nationalism, and cultural dynamics in Asia and beyond.
